Anthrax Complete Collection

The following is a discography of Anthrax, an American thrash metal band based in New York. Anthrax has released nine studio albums, six EPs, four live albums, ten Videos, twenty-nine singles, and twenty-nine music videos. This list does not include material performed by members or former members of Anthrax that was recorded with side projects or as part of their solo work.
Anthrax was formed in 1981 by Scott Ian and Danny Lilker. They found the band's name in a biology textbook and claimed it because it sounded sufficiently evil to them. Anthrax started playing locally. In 1983 Anthrax signed to Megaforce Records. The band released Fistful of Metal in 1984, and the following year they released Spreading the Disease. After the album came out, by this time Anthrax had signed with Island Records. In March 1987, the band released its third studio album, Among the Living, which was Anthrax's first Gold certified album by the RIAA. Among the Living was released in March 1987 and peaked at number sixty-two on the Billboard 200.

Anthrax's fifth album was State of Euphoria which was released in 1988 and peaked at thirty-one on the Billboard 200. The band embarked on a tour in support of the album. Anthrax would later release Persistence of Time which peaked at 24. After the release of a video and a live album the band released Sound of White Noise which peaked at 7 which is their highest position to date on the Billboard 200. The band would continue to release albums but they would get weaker chart positions then before.
Anthrax's has sold over 4 and a half million copies in the United States alone.

Fistful of Metal - 1984

Danny Lilker and Scott Ian had been the original founders of the band, but Ian elected to fire Lilker shortly after the release of the album. Ian had several reasons for doing so, specifically: the band found him to be lazy and very unprofessional, he had failed to pay his share of the rent for the band's rehearsal sessions, he had required more than thirty takes (2 entire days worth of studio time) to record the song "I'm Eighteen."
As his replacement, the band hired drummer Charlie Benante's nephew, Frank Bello, who has played on every Anthrax album ever since.
Neil Turbin had contributed some of the main song ideas, lyrics, titles and arrangements to songs on the debut album. Ian wanted to have more control over the band, and Benante, who played guitar in addition to drums, wanted to be able to make more contributions to songwriting feeling the tracks on the first album were weak. Turbin was fired from the band and Ian and Benante started a songwriting partnership with Ian writing all the lyrics, and Benante began writing the music.

Spreading the Disease - 1985

The band produced the album with Carl Canedy, Jon Zazula serving as executive producer. The album includes the single "Madhouse".

A music video was produced for "Madhouse" as well, but didn't receive much airplay because it was banned by MTV, who believed the content to be degrading to the mentally ill.
This was the last Anthrax album to feature songwriting from fired vocalist Neil Turbin, who is given songwriting credit on the songs "Armed and Dangerous" and "Gung-Ho". Songwriting credit was shared to the track "Medusa", the first and only songwriting contribution from former producer Jon Zazula. Originally he was credited as the sole writer of the song, but reissues credited the rest of the band to it as well.

Among the Living - 1987

The band and Eddie Kramer produced the album. The album includes the singles, "I Am the Law" and "Indians".

Among the Living features a drawing of Henry Kane (a character from Poltergeist II motion picture). The band stated in interviews that he was the one thing that scared them the most.

This was the last album to feature songwriting by original bassist Danny Lilker, who, despite having left the band after 1984's Fistful of Metal, was continuously credited as the co-writer of certain songs for the next two albums. On Among the Living, he is credited as the co-writer of the songs "I Am the Law" and "Imitation of Life."

The album was dedicated to the memory of Cliff Burton of Metallica fame.

In 2000 the album was released in Germany as a double album along with Persistence of Time.

On Anthrax's re-union tour in 2005 the majority of their concert set consisted of material from Among the Living, while on their 2006 tour at solo-dates they performed the album in its entirety.

State of Euphoria - 1988

The proper follow-up to Among the Living was somewhat disappointing in its inconsistency. While there are some good moments — "Be All, End All" is one of the band's most melodic moments, and several other tracks catch fire — the best thing here is a cover of Trust's "Antisocial," and it doesn't bode well when covers outshine original material. The lyrics continue the self-consciously intellectual, PC approach begun on Among the Living, but about half of the album is surprisingly dull...

Persistence of Time - 1990

Anthrax returned to the studio in the fall of 1989 with Mark Dodson (who produced the previous album, State of Euphoria) to start work on their fifth album. Recording of the album was difficult In January 1990, the band lost more than $100,000 worth of gear and their recording studio to a large structure fire. Following their personal disaster the band moved to a different studio in late February of that year to finish work on the album.
Persistence of Time lyrical focus is the need for tolerance and peace. This would be the last Anthrax studio album to feature Joey Belladonna on vocals.
The introduction to the song "Intro to Reality" featured dialogue from an episode of The Twilight Zone called Deaths-Head Revisited.
The beginning riff on "Belly of the Beast"(The Greater of Two Evils version featuring John Bush) is from the Celtic Frost song "Dethroned Emperor", which Anthrax themselves later did a cover of, which appeared on the EP Summer 2003 and as a bonus track on certain editions of Stomp 442.

Sound of White Noise - 1993

Despite being counted as one of ThrashοΏ½s Big Four of the late 80s / early 90s along with Slayer, Metallica and Megadeth, apart from first couple of releases Anthrax were never really a Thrash band in the traditional sense. That minor irrelevence aside though, they were, and still are one of the best Metal bands in the world. In my humble opinion, this is the finest record of their 9 album long career. Every single one of the 11 tracks are absolutely superb, though special mentions go to Room For One More, Invisible, 1000 Points Of Hate and C11 H17 N2 O2 S Na (Sodium Pentathol, I did A-levelmore… chemistry!!!). As John BushοΏ½s first album after joining the band, he had to prove that he was a worthy replacement for Joe Belladona who had recently left. In my opinion, he did more than that, he proved that he is one of the best vocalists in Metal full-stop. His performance throughout the whole album is flawless, as is that of AnthraxοΏ½s best known and most potent weapon, Scott IanοΏ½s crunching rhythm guitar. No matter what kind of Metal you like, be it Death, Grindcore, Industrial or even (horror of all horrors) Nu-Metal, you will like this album and you will like Anthrax. Absolutely superb stuff as ever.

Stomp 442 - 1995

Stomp 442 is the name of the seventh album by American heavy metal band Anthrax. It was released in 1995, (see 1995 in music) by Elektra Records. The band and Butcher Brothers produced the album, which includes the singles, "Fueled" and "Nothing". The album debuted at #47 on the Billboard 200 charts. Anthrax claimed that their label, Elektra Records didn't do enough to promote the album, and they left soon after. Stomp 442 is the only Anthrax album not featuring the traditional Anthrax logo.
Stomp 442 is also Anthrax's first album without Dan Spitz on lead guitar. Though not yet credited as a member of the band, Paul Crook took over lead guitar duties.

Volume 8: The Threat Is Real - 1998

Ignored by all but diehards, Stomp 442 found Anthrax in creative freefall, shackled to ideas that had ceased to be interesting years ago. Apparently, the band realized they were in dire straits — that's the only explanation for the ambitious cavalcade of sounds on Volume 8: The Threat Is Real, the follow-up to Stomp 442. Coming on the heels of Anthrax's blandest effort, the whirling array of styles on Volume 8 is welcome, but it also hides the fact that the group hasn't exactly bounced back from a songwriting slump that first reared its head on Sound of White Noise. Sheer energy and attitudemore… go a long way, however, and for a while the album is genuinely engaging. The speed metal has actual bite, and the departures, from the heavy percussion of the opener, "Crush," through the country stomp "Toast" to the unlisted acoustic closer, "Pieces," are nearly all successful. The problem is, the entire thing adds up to less than the sum of its parts. At first, the revitalized and newly creative Anthrax is enthralling, but soon it becomes apparent that all of the change is on the surface — beneath the stylistic games, there aren't many memorable songs. Still, the surfaces are quite appealing, suggesting that Volume 8 is a transitional album that will lead Anthrax into new, uncharted territory

We've Come for You All - 2003

We've Come for You All is the ninth studio album by the American heavy metal band Anthrax. It was produced by the band and Scrap 60, and includes the singles "What Doesn't Die", "Safe Home", and "Taking the Music Back". It is considered to be a 'comeback album' for the band after lackluster commercial success of their previous two albums. Despite the success, it only reached #122 on the Billboard 200 charts. It is also the first Anthrax record featuring Rob Caggiano on lead guitar.
"Strap It On" and "Cadillac Rock Box" both feature guitar solos by "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott.

Cover art for the album was done by comic artist Alex Ross.

The song "We're a Happy Family" was originally recorded by the Ramones on the Rocket to Russia album.
One minute after the last song ends, you can hear a percussion outtake which was not used because Charlie Benante was unaware he was humming.
The actor Keanu Reeves appears on the "Safe Home" video clip.

Compilation albums & Lives :

Anthrax - Armed and Dangerous - 1985

Before they started incorporating hardcore punk and rap into their thrash sound, Anthrax pumped out Iron Maiden-inspired metal that only hinted at their future. With the album split between vocalists Neil Turbin and Joey Belladonna, one can see why the latter got to keep his job. Turbin's high-register yelp is an acquired taste, lacking the emphasis that the material needs. He can hit the notes, but he lacks the presence that would make Belladonna more effective. Luckily, he is only present on the last two tracks, which were not originally on the album but made it onto the CD release. Belladonnamore…'s clear wail would be more suited to power metal ? la Helloween, but it was his voice that also differentiated Anthrax from their thrash contemporaries. This is his first recorded appearance, and he displays more personality and range on his five songs than most of his post-1986 output. Giving the cover of "God Save the Queen" a sarcastic snarl, unleashing his banshee wail on the title track, making the remakes of "Metal Thrashing Mad" and "Panic" twice as good: these are the reasons why he was the obvious choice for their '80s material. It would be years before the band's direction clashed with Belladonna's abilities, but here they found the perfect singer for what they were doing at the time. It may not be their best work, and they may have even started the annoying trend of heavy metal Sex Pistols covers, but Armed and Dangerous was the first sign that the band was going to be one of the major forces in the emerging speed metal scene.

I'm the Man - 1987

Genius. Pure genius. Way before Rage Against the Machine, before Run-D.M.C.'s collaboration with Aerosmith, and before their infamous collaboration with Public Enemy, Anthrax take the credit — or blame — for being the pioneers of merging rap and metal. Released in 1987, their now-classic I'm the Man is a funny tribute/parody/attempt at hip-hop that is not only pulled off successfully, but it's also the first release that showcases Anthrax's sense of humor — the latter of which was also a first for the genre of speed metal. There are also three live tracks — one of whichmore… is the title track — as well as a "moshable" version of Black Sabbath's "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" — all of which are great but will probably be overlooked. Has it been mentioned that this EP is genius?

Attack of the Killer B's

A collection of B sides. Rerecordings of old S.O.D. material. What more could an Anthrax fan want?! Theres a lot of humour on this CD with songs like Milk, and the ballad about a woman who gets hit by a truck, N.F.B (Dallabinikufesin). Theres a new version of Anthrax's biggest selling single I'm The Man called I'm The Man'91. It's heaver thatn the origional and sounds more polished. Scott Ian the guitarist sings alot on this album too. He shows he has what it takes in the heavy as Hell song Protest And Survive. The biggest attention grabber on this CD is probably the song Bring The Noise withmore… Anthrax teamed up with Public Enemy. This song is an excellent example of how rap/metal should sound. It was the origional rap/metal song (apart from I'm The Man), and is deffinatly better than the rap/metal that pollutes our ears today. This was the last album (not counting the live album and compilations) with Joey Belladonna on vocals. This was the end of an era but the beggining of a new, great 3 albums with John Bush of Armoured Saint taking over

Return of the Killer A's (Best Compilation Album) - 1991

Return of the Killer A's is a best of compilation album by the heavy metal band Anthrax, released in 1999.
The cover of Ball of Confusion features Anthrax's first new recording with former lead singer Joey Belladonna since 1991, and their first with former bassist Dan Lilker since 1984. Neither one would stay with the band past that song's recording, though a tour featuring both Belladonna and then-current Anthrax singer John Bush was in the works at one point. The song is also notable because it features both Belladonna and Bush on vocals.
